Foz do Iguaçu

Foz do Iguaçu is a Brazilian municipality located in the Western region of the state of Paraná. The road distance to Curitiba, the state's administrative capital, is 643 kilometers. Its territorial area is 617,701 km², of which 61,200 km² are within the urban perimeter, and its population, according to the IBGE estimates of 2021, was 285,415 inhabitants. According to an article published by Exame magazine in March 2014, it is the third destination for foreign tourists in the country and the first in the southern region. It is internationally known for the Iguaçu Falls, one of the winners of the contest that chose the New7Wonders of Nature, and for the Itaipu Hydroelectric Power Plant, the second largest in the world in size and the first in energy generation. In 1996, Itaipu was considered one of the New7Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers. Foz is part of a trinational urban region with over 700,000 inhabitants, which also includes Ciudad del Este in Paraguay and Puerto Iguazú in Argentina, countries with which it shares borders. "Iguaçu" is an indigenous toponym, originally meaning "big water," and the current name was formed by adding a vowel. The residents are referred to as "iguaçuenses" in the demonym.
