Brasília, planned just over 60 years ago, enchants visitors with its meticulous attention to detail, ingenious designs, and vibrant colors.

As the 3rd capital city of Brazil, following Salvador and Rio de Janeiro, Brasília was inaugurated in 1960 under the leadership of President Juscelino Kubitschek. This audacious project swiftly became the symbol of urban planning and modern architecture in the 20th century. The decision to construct a new capital aimed to centralize the country’s population and shield the capital from potential attacks by foreign ships along the coast.

With a population of over 3 million people, Brasília’s fundamental layout, known as the Pilot Plan (Plano Piloto), was masterfully crafted by urban planner Lúcio Costa and architect Oscar Niemeyer. The design, reminiscent of an airplane’s shape, is a testament to their visionary brilliance and has earned its well-deserved spot on UNESCO’s World Cultural Heritage List. Notably, Brasília holds the distinction of having the largest area on the Heritage List worldwide.

The Juscelino Kubitschek Bridge, one of Brasilia’s icons

The heart of Brasília is formed by the iconic Pilot Plan, intersected by two grand boulevards known as “axes”: the Monumental Axis and the Road Axis. The Monumental Axis houses a plethora of notable attractions, such as the Three Powers Square, the Planalto Palace, the National Congress, the breathtaking Metropolitan Cathedral of Brasília, and the towering TV Tower. On the other hand, the Road Axis is divided into North and South “wings,” housing the city’s residential blocks.

In adherence to the Lucio Costa project, all constructions in Brasília must adhere to predetermined characteristics. Notably, residential buildings stand on columns, their stilts facing extensive green areas, creating a harmonious blend of urbanity and nature.

The renowned Dona Sarah Kubitschek City Park, fondly referred to as City Park, serves as one of the capital’s prime outdoor leisure hubs. Encompassing an expansive 420 hectares, it ranks among the largest urban parks globally, offering an array of amenities like sports courts, an amusement park, an artificial lake, barbecue grills, an equestrian center, walking paths, and cycling lanes.

The mesmerizing Lake Paranoá, adorned with excellent restaurants and bars along its shores, becomes a vibrant hub for water sports enthusiasts on weekends. Stand-Up Paddling, canoeing, and kitesurfing are among the preferred activities in this scenic aquatic playground.

Brasília’s architecture and urban planning set it apart, presenting an unparalleled sight that stands in a league of its own. A planned city like no other, Brasília’s distinct beauty captivates visitors with its modernist allure and well-thought-out design.
