Paraty combines history, breathtaking landscapes, extraordinary natural beauty, and a unique architectural ensemble.

Founded in 1667 and located 232 km from the city of Rio de Janeiro, Paraty is an outstanding example of colonial architecture preservation and richness. Its historic center is protected by the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage (Iphan).

The city showcases an original architectural ensemble, featuring the Churches of Santa Rita, Our Lady of the Rosary, Our Lady of Sorrows, and the Mother Church of Our Lady of Remedies. Additionally, you’ll find the imposing Perpetual Defender Fort, the Holy House of Mercy, and various townhouses that complete this unique historical and cultural heritage.

The city’s port played an extremely important role during the Gold Cycle in Brazil because it was the main outlet for the production of gold and precious stones from Minas Gerais to Portugal. Paraty is part of the Royal Road, the longest tourist route in the country, stretching for 1630 kilometers across three states: Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo. Additionally, the city is part of the Serra da Bocaina National Park, a natural reserve covering 110,000 hectares characterized by its rugged terrain, deep valleys, stunning waterfalls, and rich fauna and flora.

As an important tourist hub, Paraty is surrounded by approximately 50 beaches and 65 islands and is frequently traversed by sailboats, schooners, and other vessels in its maritime space.

This city is considered one of the best places in Brazil for diving, thanks to its privileged location as “a bay within the bay of Ilha Grande,” which rarely requires the cancellation of outings due to unfavorable weather conditions. It is recommended to seek out one of the local tour operators to enjoy this wonderful experience.

Furthermore, the waterfalls surrounding the city are natural treasures that deserve your attention. Some of the most notable ones include Pedra Branca Waterfall, Penha/Tobogã Waterfall, Toca da Ingrácia Waterfall, Iririguaçu Waterfall, and Pedra Lisa/Itaquari Waterfall.

The production of cachaça is a tradition in this region, with several artisanal distilleries, some of which are open for visits.

Paraty is also famous for hosting the renowned International Literary Festival, known as Flip. This traditional event takes place in the city between the months of June and July and features prominent writers, both national and international.
